The picks: State is due against LSU
The picks, not the fix, are in. We’re coming off our worst week of the season, 11-4, which puts us at 29-8 on the season.
That’s 78.4 percent, which isn’t bad, unless you play in the SEC West and then it’s not nearly good enough.
Let’s try again, starting with an interesting game tonight…
Auburn 41, Kansas State 30 — Both teams are 2-0 going in and K-State is historically tough at home under veteran coach Bill Snyder. But Auburn has too much firepower. Unless there’s a bunch of Auburn turnovers, the Tigers win a big road game.
Mississippi State 24, LSU 21 — Was Emory Bellard really the last State coach to beat LSU? No, just seems that way. LSU has owned State in recent years. The Bulldogs, 9-point underdogs, are due. This week’s upset special.
Southern Miss 27, Appalachian State 24 — As the Golden Eagles begin to take baby steps back to respectability, this game is huge. They need to be 2-2 going into their league play
Alabama 31, Florida 10 — The Gators were many experts’ predicted most improved team for 2014. I haven’t seen it yet. Have you?
South Carolina 38, Vanderbilt 17 — No contest.
Georgia 49, Troy 3 — Troy is way down this year and catches the Bulldogs at an inopportune time.
Texas A & M 56, SMU 20 — The Aggies continue to challenge Auburn as the SEC’s most explosive team.
Missouri 44, Indiana 7 — Missouri is better than I expected and Indiana might be the worst team in a bad league.
Arkansas 34, Northern Illinois 24 — This is not a gimmee for Arkansas, but the Hogs should prevail.
Jackson State 27, Grambling 13 — This is assuming Grambling shows up.
Alcorn State 38, Mississippi Valley State 14 — Jay Hopson’s Braves might be the best team in the SWAC.
Duke 38, Tulane 17 — Amazing what David Cutcliffe is doing at Duke.
Florida State 41, Clemson 27 — This isn’t one of your better Clemson teams.
Saints 31, Vikings 24 — The Saints are 0-2 and I am 0-2 picking the Saints, an alarming trend that ends this week.
New book will feature Mississippi Sports Hall of Famers. Here’s a preview.
