An Evening with Dr. James Andrews – POSTPONED

UPDATED 3/12/20: The appearance of world renowned Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. James Andrews at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has been postponed.  Dr. Andrews was scheduled to speak about treatment and care of young athletes on Thursday March, 19th, but no new date has yet been scheduled.

“After consulting with Dr. Andrews, and with the nationwide cancelling of sporting events of all types, we felt it in everyone’s best interest to postpone his appearance until concerns of this health situation resolve,” says Museum Executive Director, Bill Blackwell.  “While both parties were willing to hold the event, the uncertainty of attendance and concern for the young athletes we were trying to reach was paramount.”

No new time or date has been set for Dr. Andrews’ appearance at the museum but ample notice will be given when a new date is selected.  “We appreciate Dr. Andrews’ willingness to educate players and coaches about the perils facing youth players and the best practices to protect them from injury no matter the sport,” according to Blackwell.  “We are very grateful that a man of his stature is willing to give of himself to help others.


World renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews will speak at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on Thursday evening March 19th. The evening will begin with a social hour featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, beer and wine at 5:30 in the Trustmark Conference Center and then move to the main arena of the museum for Dr. Andrews’s talk which includes information on preventing injuries for young athletes.  Known for working on high-profile professional athletes, Dr. Andrews is noted for his work with sports medicine related injuries, including “Tommy John” surgeries. This is a rare opportunity to hear his thoughts on youth sports and care of young athletes.  The event is complimentary for all Lifetime Members of the Museum with tickets available for $50 for adults and $25 for students. Purchase tickets below. Dr. Andrews is an LSU graduate and an outstanding athlete, having won both the SEC Indoor and Outdoor Pole Vault titles. He completed LSU School of Medicine and his orthopaedic residency at Tulane. He had surgical fellowships with Dr. Frank McCue III and at the University of Lyon in France.

Presently he serves as Medical Director and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Auburn University and is Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for University of Alabama. Dr. Andrews serves on the Medical and Safety Advisory Committee of USA Baseball and is a board member of Little League Baseball, Inc.

In professional sports, he is a Senior Consultant for the Washington Redskins, and is the Orthopaedic Medical Director for the Tampa Bay Rays and the LPGA. He founded the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham and co-founded the American Sports Medicine Institute, a non-profit dedicated to injury prevention and research in sports medicine. He also founded the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

A native of Homer, LA, Dr. Andrews and his wife Jenelle have six children and eleven grandchildren.  He is a yacht racing enthusiast in his spare time and has won and competed in races world wide.
