C Spire Ferriss watch list announced

Professional baseball scouts and college coaches will have plenty to choose from in selecting the winner of the 2013 C Spire Ferriss Trophy.
What follows is a 10-person watch list for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy, which will be awarded May 20 at a a luncheon at your Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
This is not an official list of finalists. Voters — scouts and coaches — are not limited to voting for players on this list. But this a list produced from discussions with Major League scouts and college coaches. Five finalists, up from three in the past, will be announced on May 13. All five finalists will be invited to the May 20 luncheon and the winner will be announced at the luncheon, which will begin at 11:15 a.m.
IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:
Josh Branstetter (Delta State): A senior right hander from Pensacola, Fla., and the ace of the staff for the Delta State Statesmen, who have been ranked No. 1 much of the season. Has 7-2 record with a 1.89 earned run average. Struck out 57 and walked 13 in 76 innings.
Chase Fowler (USM): A switch-hitting senior catcher from Cumming, Ga., Fowler has hit .338 and is tied for the team lead with 23 RBIs. He has thrown out 67 percent of the runners who have tried to steal.
Adam Frazier (MSU): A slick-fielding junior shortstop and leadoff hitter from Bishop, Ga., Frazier has hit safely in all 46 Bulldogs games this season. He ranks fourth in the SEC in hits, third in runs, fourth in doubles and sixth in triples. He leads the SEC with 154 assists at shortstop. He hits .332 and has a team-high 20 multi-hit games.
Jonathan Holder (MSU): A sophomore closer from Gulfport, Holder is on the mid-season watch list for the national Stopper of the Year. He has 12 saves and a 1.50 earned run average. In two seasons, he has 21 saves and 84 strikeouts in just 58.1 innings to rank among State’s all-time leading relief pitchers.
Brett Huber (Ole Miss): Rebels’ closer, a senior right-hander from Belleville, Ill., is the career leader in saves at Ole Miss with 36 and ranks third all-time in the SEC.  Has 10 saves this season with a earned run average of 1.53. Opponents hit .164 against him.
Ben Kingsley (Delta State): Senior outfielder and DH from Mantachie, has driven in 53 runs in 45 games for the No. 1 ranked Statesmen. Hitting .375 with six home runs and 13 doubles.
Andrew Pierce (USM): A senior right-hander from Stringer and the ace of the Golden Eagle staff, Pierce has achieved a 9-1 record, striking out 77 while walking just 14 in 84.2 innings. His ERA is 2.13 and teams are hitting just .206 off him.
Hunter Renfroe (MSU): A slugging rightfielder  who is on the mid-season watch list for the Golden Spikes Award as college baseball’s most outstanding player. Leads SEC with a .403 batting average and has a team-high 14 home runs and 48 RBIs despite missing five early season games with a hand injury. In contention for SEC’s Triple Crown.
Stuart Turner (Ole Miss): This junior catcher from Eunice, La., leads the Rebels in hitting with a .389 average. He ranks in the top five in the SEC in average, slugging percentage, hits, runs batted in and doubles. He leads the SEC, having thrown out 19 of 38 runners trying to steal.
Bobby Wahl (Ole Miss): A junior right-hander from Springfield, Va., Wahl has an 8-0 record in 11 starts with an earned run average of 1.22. In his three no decisions he left the Rebels holding the lead or tied with Vandy, Kentucky and Florida. Opponents are hitting .182 against him. Has started six games against nationally ranked teams and has a 4-0 record with a 0.66 ERA in those games.

    Millsaps coach Jim Page nominates two Majors:
    • Senior catcher Wes Perkins who leads NCAA Division III in hits (77 in 43 games), doubles (23) total bases, and is fourth in RBI with 55. His on-base percentage was a whopping .493..
    • Sophomore infielder/pitcher Keith Shumaker, who leads Division II in runs scored with 58 and is third in hits (68) and sixth in RBI (51). He was 5-0 in eight starts as a pitcher, including four complete games.
