Happy 97th to Hunter George Weddington

Posted on: April 18,2014

Happy 97th birthday today to our oldest living Mississippi Sports Hall of Famer, Hunter George Weddington of Meridian.

Cleveland

Weddington, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983, won three State Amateur golf championships, the first in 1939 and the last in 1948, nearly 66 years ago. He first played in the State Am in 1936. Weddington, who competed in more than 50 state amateurs, still hits golf balls, chips and putts, and will play a few holes occasionally at Northwood Country Club where he won six of the prestigious Northwood Invitational titles.

“He’s pretty amazing really; he still lives by himself, does most everything for himself,” says Lou Weddington Hart, his daughter and fellow Hall of Famer. Lou Weddington Hart who won nine women’s State Am titles.
Weddington and his daughter are the Hall of Fame’s only father-daughter combination.
Father and daughter watched The Masters together last weekend.
“He enjoys watching and marvels at how far they hit the ball and the scores they shoot,” Hart said. “He says they play a different game that we used to play, and he’s right about that.”
Perhaps, but not many of the guys playing in the Masters can say they made 19 career holes in one. Hunter George Weddington can.
