Crazy money? It will spend for Mike Wallace

Notes, quotes and an opinion or two. . . .

Congratulations to former Ole Miss standout Mike Wallace, the fastest man in football, for his new five-year, $60 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, who just got a lot faster and more explosive. Congrats also to Hattiesburg agent Bus Cook who negotiated the contract and got $30 million of that money guaranteed. That’s huge money for a wide receiver. . . . One Miami columnist called it “crazy money.” Perhaps, but it will spend. . . .

The good news for Cincinnati Reds hopeful Billy Hamilton of Taylorsville, the fastest man in baseball: He has successfully stolen all three bases he has tried to swipe in spring training this season. The bad news, he has hit safely just two times in his first 18 at bats and has struck out eight times for a .111 batting average. He has walked four times to make his on base percentage an even .200, but that’s not going to make the cut. . . Hamilton stole a baseball record 155 bases in 132 minor league games last year, but there’s an old baseball saying, “You can’t steal first base.” . . .

Our Hall of Fame main floor now includes two 80-inch high definition TV monitors, which add greatly to the experience of an event like Monday’s C Spire Howell-Gillom luncheon. Those TVs will soon add to visitors’ ever day experiences in the museum with historical Mississippi sports highlights. Coming soon will be another 80-inch high def TV that will go on the scoreboard that hangs over the arena floor and serves the mezzanine with stadium seating for 50. It’s going to be perfect for groups that want to rent the mezzanine for sports-themed parties (i.e. Final Four, World Series, Masters, college football games.) Your Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame will soon open a remodeled and updated Olympic room and we are working on several other improvements. Stay tuned. . . .

Can’t believe the New Orleans Saints let left tackle Jermon Bushrod get away to the Chicago Bears. That leaves Drew Brees proverbial blind side unprotected. Bushrod was a Pro Bowler, a solid left tackle both in pass protection and the run game. Interestingly, the offensive coordinator in Chicago is Aaron Kromer, formerly the offensive line coach of the New Orleans Saints, who knows just how good Bushrod is. The Saints own the 15th pick in the upcoming draft. It would appear to me the priority just became offensive tackle….

Here is the most unbelievable stat of this early college baseball season: When Friday night ace Andrew Pierce pitches, Southern Miss is 4-0 and has outscored opponents 42-11. When Pierce doesn’t pitch, the Golden Eagles are 3-9 and have ben outscored 82-43. Pierce’s ERA is 1.76 and teams are hitting .206 off him. Opponents are hitting .305 against the rest of the staff. Pierce has struck out 35 while walking only two. Other USM pitchers have struck out 100 but walked 58. Amazing numbers. . . . scary, but amazing.
