Vivians Captures 4th Straight C Spire Gillom Trophy; Q. Weatherspoon takes home the C Spire Howell Honor
Mississippi State’s Victoria Vivians made it a clean sweep, taking home her fourth straight C Spire Peggie Gillom Trophy today. The award goes to the Most Outstanding Women’s basketball player in the state and Victoria became the first-ever four time winner. She topped the team in scoring with an average of 19.6. The Senior from Scott Central was first team all-SEC and will lead the team into the NCAA’s tournament with a 32 -1 record.
On the men’s side, Quinndary Weatherspoon, a junior guard was selected as the Most Outstanding Player and awarded the C Spire Bailey Howell Trophy. Weatherspoon was a nominee last year but lost out to Ole Miss forward Sebastian Saiz. Weatherspoon’s victory breaks a string of five straight winners from Ole Miss.
Vivians led the Lady Bulldogs to an SEC regular season crown. The #2 nationally ranked team will enter the NCAA tournament later this week. “Victoria has put together a fabulous year,” according to MSU coach Vic Schaefer. “ We asked her to upgrade her shot selection and fine tune her game and she responded with her best season.”
Coach Ben Howland’s squad enters this week’s SEC Men’s Tournament likely needing to win the SEC Tournament for an NCAA bid. The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 21-10 mark. Weatherspoon led the team in minutes played and scoring with an average of 14.7 ppg. Quinndary was the leading vote getter over his younger brother Nick and Cortez Edwards of Southern Mississippi.
The winners were selected by vote of the media covering college sports statewide combined with a fan vote conducted by C Spire. Both Vivians and Weatherspoon also won the fan voting.
