Notes, quotes and an opinion or two….
No, the New Orleans Saints won’t make the playoffs, but the Saints are far better than several teams that will. You can count the number of teams that would want to face the Saints in the playoffs on the fingers of one catcher’s mitt. . . . We keep reading and hearing people talk about Sean Payton leaving the Saints for the Cowboys. I guess it could happen but anybody who hitches his wagon to Tony Romo instead of Drew Brees probably deserves what he gets….
From the nobody-ever-said-the-guy-couldn’t-coach department: Larry Eustachy has Colorado State off to an 11-2 start that includes a most recent 88-52 thumping of Virginia Tech in the finals of the Las Vegas Classic. . . . Ex Ole Miss point guard and assistant coach Michael White has Louisiana Tech off to a 9-3 start. That White has become a winning coach should not surprise anyone who watched him play the game. He was a coach on the floor even then . . . .
So sorry to see where Robert Miller, the long-time chief photographer of the Hattiesburg American, has passed away. “Chief” we called him. He was a softspoken man who quietly went about his business and always did it well. . . .
I don’t know if the 1964-65 Lanier national championship team is the best high school team in Mississippi history, but the 43-0 Bulldogs are in the first sentence of the conversation. We will honor them Jan. 23 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Here’s how good they were: Cornell Warner, who went on to play seven productive seasons in the NBA, was the third guy off the bench! . . .
That pre-integration team never received the recognition it deserved, much less championship rings or jackets. It will soon. . . .
LaShay Page, who transferred to South Carolina from USM for his senior season, has started all nine games since gaining eligiblity and is the team’s second leading scorer at 12 points per game. . . . Not saying SEC basketball is a bit down this year but Florida, at No. 21, has the highest RPI. Realtime RPI has the SEC rated eighth among the leagues, just behind the Atlantic 10 and just ahead of the Missouti Valley…. The Big 10 is No. 1. . . .
President Woodrow Wilson took up the game of golf late in the life at the suggestion of his doctor. Wilson described the game so accurately: “Playing golf is an ineffectual attempt to put an elusive ball into an obscure hole with implements ill adapted to the purpose.” Later, Winston Churchill supposedly said: “Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.” Historians can argue who copied whom, but, if you ask me, both were right.
