Record-setting junior quarterback Nick Mullens, from Hoover, Ala., is the Southern Miss nominee for the 2015 C Spire Conerly Trophy, the school announced today.

Mullens makes the high-powered USM offense go, ranking nationally in passing touchdowns (6th with 30), in passing yards (9th with 3,276), in passing yards per game (10th at 327.6), in total offense (14th with 3,223) and in passing efficiency (15th at 159.9).

For his 386-yard, five touchdown performance against Rice last week, Mullens was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and the Manning Award Star of the Week.

Mullens is the fourth player nominated for the C Spire Conerly, which will be presented Dec. 1 for the 20th time. Other nominees include Dak Prescott of Mississippi State, Marcel Newson of Mississippi College and Javancy Jones of Jackson State.

Mississippi’s 10 football playing senior colleges all nominate a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy. Schools have until Nov. 23 to nominate a finalist for the award.

The Dec. 1 awards program, at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, will include a reception at 5:30 p.m. and a 6:30 p.m. banquet. Tickets, $100 each, are available by calling the MSHOF at 601 982-8264 or click here for order form.

I would find it amazing if Nick didn’t win this award. He’s such a great leader and has showcased that by bringing a dreadful football team into a great record and possible conference championship appearance. Not only that but has broken the record of a former Conerly Award recipient. He has much better stats than Dak Prescott, last year’s winner. Look at the Southern Miss highlights and you’ll see how much he deserves this honor.
