One vote for Manziel

Posted on: December 03,2012

Notes, quotes and an opinion or two. . .
I can’t vote for the C Spire Conerly Trophy any more, but do still have a vote in the Heisman Trophy. That vote was cast for Johnny Manziel. And, yes, I know he is a freshman, but the Heisman doesn’t go to the best upperclassmen in the nation, it goes to the most outstanding football player in the nation. Manziel was the most outstanding I saw this year and may wind up being the best we’ve ever seen. . . .
Glad to report Alyne Payton, mother of Walter and Eddie, and one of the most kind, thoughtful people you’ll ever meet, is recovering well after a lengthy illness and hospital stay. She’s special. . . .
The MHSAA hit the jackpot with the weather for this past weekend’s state championship games. Best of Show, as usual, was the Class 1A game. Stringer beat French Camp 20-17, and, believe me, players for both teams left everything they had on the field. . .
My early line on Notre Dame-Alabama: Tide -8. Too much speed. . . .
No, don’t know who Southern Miss will hire as its new football coach, but I will tell you I can’t believe no Division I (bowls series) team has ever given Steve Campbell a shot. He won national championships at Delta State and Gulf Coast Community College, knows every coach in Mississippi and can just flat coach. . . . He’ll win if anybody ever gives him a shot. . . .
Special congrats to South Panola head coach Lance Pogue. He lost his daddy and then won another championship, one a bunch of people never thought he would win. . . .
Today’s quote of the day is from Vince Lombardi: Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while……you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.

Unfortunately, so is losing.

My favorite Lombardi quote going away:
I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious.

Amen on Steve Campbell! He made my freshman year of college one I’ll never forget.
