You need winners; I am 'focused' on providing

Posted on: November 13,2013

Drum roll please: For the past three weeks, your fearless forecaster has picked 26 games correctly and only four incorrectly. That’s 86.7 percent and that’s a winning percentage only Nick Saban could fume about.
And he would. You know he would.
For the season, I am now 82-27 for 75.7 percent, right in there with most coaches whose plaques reside in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Well, OK, John Howard Vaught got me at 75.9, but I’m moving up fast.
But as any coach would tell you, now is not the time to get cocky. I’ve got to stay focused, pick them one game at a time, never forget that you are only as good as you are this one week. It’s a long season, lots of peaks and valleys, and you’ve got to keep your eye on prize.
Focus, focus, focus…
And so…
Alabama 31, Mississippi State 10 — I watched LSU play Alabama last Saturday night. What I saw was the best collection of talent in college football being coached by the best coach in college football. I saw something so close to perfection it was scary.
Ole Miss 48, Troy 20 — Ole Miss keeps getting better. This is not one of Troy’s better teams. The Rebels are looking for win No. 7 — a goal that seemed so distant before Hugh Freeze took over. They will get it.
Florida Atlantic 27, Southern Miss 20 — USM plays now with what might have been a jayvee team in the past. They are young, and they are hopefully learning and improving. But they are two solid recruiting classes away from being anywhere near what Southern Miss has been over the years.
Jackson State 27, Alcorn State 24 — Both Rick Comegy and Jay Hopson have done really done admirable jobs this season. It’s 8-2 JSU (8-0 in the SWAC) against 8-3 Alcorn (6-2 in the SWAC) . JSU has the homefield advantage but I fully anticipate a close, extremely competitive game.
Millsaps 28, Rhodes 27 — They don’t put point spreads on D-III games, but if they did this one probably would be a pick-it. Rhodes is really good, playing at home. But how could I pick against 9-0 Millsaps, especially after the way the Majors won last week.
Auburn 34, Georgia 33 — OK, Auburn, I believe.
South Carolina 47, Florida 13 — You think the Ol’ Ball Coach won’t enjoy this?
Duke 27, Miami 24 — The Fighting Cutcliffes continue to over-achieve.
Texas 31, Oklahoma State 30 — This would be seven straight for the Longhorns since getting swamped at home by Ole Miss.
Saints 34, 49ers 24 — New Orleans is vulnerable away from the Superdome, but they are 5-0 and have won by an average margin of 20 when they play on Poydras.
