Bring the Saints back to Millsaps….

Short takes …
About the New Orleans Saints: My mama taught me that if I couldn’t say something nice, I should not say anything. So, that’s that….
About the officiating in the Memphis-Ole Miss game: Sorry, Mama, that was some of the worst I have ever seen. When they called an obvious forward pass — three yards forward! — a lateral, and then called Hugh Freeze for unsportsmanlike conduct for arguing the call, that was as bad as it gets. The officials were from the American Athletic Conference, the new league to which Memphis belongs. I have always thought when you have teams from two different conferences play one another, the officials should come from a third conference…
Back to the Saints: Perhaps they should return to Millsaps for training camp instead of going off to a five-star resort in West Virginia. Seems like they have gotten soft…
On Arkansas: Folks, it’s going to be no fun playing the Razorbacks for the next few years. Brett Bielema’s team plays as physical as anybody. They mauled Texas A&M at the line of scrimmage and should have won the game…
On Ole Miss’ performance against Memphis: Defense gets an A-plus and the offense something less, but the bottom line is it was a W…
On Rice’s victory over Southern Miss: Better to call it USM’s loss to Rice. The Golden Eagles’ defeat was mostly self-inflicted…
Game I wish I had been at: Yale beat Army 49-43 to celebrate 100 years in the Yale Bowl. It was the first Ivy League victory over FBS competition since 1986. …
On point spreads: Alabama opened a 4-point favorite over Ole Miss. Texas A&M opened a 1½ pick over State. I had guessed Bama would be a 6-point pick and State would be a 1-point favorite…
On the Associated Press poll: Ole Miss is 11th, State 12th, the highest the two teams have been, together, since Oct. 4 of 1958, when the Rebels were 6th and State 11th. Keep in mind, back then, the season opened on the last Saturday in September. Both teams had played just one game at that point. That State team would finish 3-6.
