C Spire Ferriss Trophy watch list update

What follows is an update on the C Spire Ferriss Trophy watch list. The award, named for Mississippi baseball legend Boo Ferriss, goes to the player selected by Major League scouts and college coaches as Mississippi’s most outstanding college baseball player.
The winner will be announced at a May 20 awards luncheon at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The five finalists will be announced on May 13.

Josh Branstetter (Delta State) pitched another gem for the Statesmen in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. In a 9-3 victory over Christian Brothers, Branstetter went seven innings, striking out 12 and walking two and allowing only one run. Branstetter advanced to 8-2 and has a 1.89 earned run average.
Chase Fowler (USM) went 3 for 12 at East Carolina over the weekend. He drove in all three runs in Saturday’s contest with a two-run single in the eighth to tie the game and then put the Eagles ahead for good in the 11th with a sacrifice fly. Fowler, who has caught 42 games for the Golden Eagles this season, ranks second on the club in hitting with a .324 average with eight doubles, three triples, a home run and 26 RBI. He has thrown out 20 of 34 potential base stealers this season. He is fielding .989.
Adam Frazier (MSU) raised his team-leading hits total to 65. The slick-fielding shortstop has had a hand in 50 double plays this season. He is hitting .323 with a team-leading 20 multi-hit games. Frazier leads SEC shortstops in assists.
Chris Good (Belhaven) finished the season with a 14-3 record a 2.18 earned run average with 51 strikeouts and 34 walks. He is a sophomore from the Dallas area. Opponents hit .237 against him.
Jonathan Holder (MSU) (2-0, 1.26) registered a win and tied the Mississippi State record with his 13th save during the weekend. In two appearances he retired 16 of the 19 batters he faced, 10 via strikeout, allowing one hit among three base-runners in 5.2 innings of game-closing relief. Has a remarkable 0.40 ERA in 11 SEC appearances.
Brett Huber (Ole Miss) suffered his second loss of the season Sunday against Auburn and is 3-2 with 10 saves through 17 appearances. Career leader at Ole Miss with 36 saves and third all-time in the SEC. Has held opponents to a .191 batting average and holds a 1.89 ERA.
Ben Kingsley (Delta State) went 2 for 8 with a double and a stolen base in DSU’s first two games of the GSC Tournament. He is hitting .370 and leads the Statesmen with six home runs, 14 doubles and 53 runs batted in.
Andrew Pierce (USM) registered a no-decision in a 10-9 Southern Miss, 11-inning victory at East Carolina last Saturday. Pierce went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Pierce is 9-1 on the season with a 2.27 ERA. He has 82 strikeouts in 91 innings of work. USM is 10-2 in games Pierce has started, 15-19 in games he hasn’t pitched.
Hunter Renfroe (MSU) (.394, 15 home runs, 49 RBI) added to his SEC-leading home run total with his 15th blast of the year. Renfroe scored the winning run Sunday to clinch the Bulldogs’ three-game sweep of Alabama. Renfroe ranks third in the nation in home runs. He ranks third in the SEC in hitting.
Stuart Turner (Ole Miss) now ranks second in the SEC in hitting with a .397 average. He has five home runs and 46 RBI. In four games last week, the red-hot Turner hit safely 10 times in 17 at bats with two doubles and three runs batted in. Ranks in the top 5 in the SEC in batting average (.397), slugging percentage (.580), hits (69), RBI (46) and is second in doubles (15)
Bobby Wahl (Ole Miss) remained undefeated in a 6-1 victory over Auburn. Wahl went eight innings, allowing only one run and striking out five. Wahl is now 9-0 with a 1.21 earned run average. He has struck out 64 and walked 35 in 81.2 innings. Has started six games against nationally-ranked teams this season with a 4-0 record, 0.66 ERA, two combined shutouts and is holding opponents to a .162 batting average against while allowing only three earned runs in 41.0 innings of work.
