Week three of the college football season is in the books. What did we learn? Mississippi State has a very good football team, and Ole Miss has lots of work to do.
Mississippi State improved to 3-0, and with their lopsided win over Louisiana-Lafayette the Bulldogs moved up to #14 in the latest Associated Press college football rankings. Senior quarterback Nick Fitzgerald accounted for six touchdowns as he ran for four scores and passed for a couple others. MSU racked up 607 yards of offense as they scored on their first seven possessions. The Bulldogs have outscored their three opponents 87-9 in the first half this year. This week the Bulldogs will take on undefeated Kentucky in Lexington.
Ole Miss was not competitive in their lopsided loss to No.1 Alabama. The Rebels will have to have a short memory or this season could get out of control. Ole Miss defense has allowed 12 touchdowns in the last two games, and the unit must get on the same page to have any success. The offense must play mistake free if the team is to be successful. Ole Miss hosts Kent State this Saturday afternoon.
SEC has six top 25 teams
The Southeastern Conference has six teams in the Top 25 of the AP football poll. Alabama is, of course, number one while Georgia moved past Clemson into the second spot. LSU has moved from 25th three weeks ago all the way up to sixth. Auburn is ninth while MSU is 14th and Texas A&M is in at #22. Big games this week are the Aggies going to Alabama and Mississippi State visiting Kentucky.
JSU wins first game
Jackson State claimed their first win of the year with an 18-16 road win at Florida A&M; Florida Tech whipped winless Delta State, 30-12; Alcorn rolled over Texas Southern, 27-15 as they held TSU to zero yards rushing; Millsaps scored in the game’s final seconds on a field goal to slip past Trinity, 10-7; and Texas Lutheran edged Belhaven, 23-20. Mississippi Valley was open as they prepare to battle Alcorn this week. Mississippi College’s contest in North Carolina was cancelled because of Hurricane Florence as was Southern Mississippi’s contest with Appalachian State. The Golden Eagles will host Rice this week to open their C-USA slate. Last year’s quarterback Kwadra Griggs was reinstated to the football team this week.
JUCO Results
East Mississippi, ranked No. 1 nationally, romped over Itawamba, 56-26; No. 5 Northwest blasted Delta, 59-16; No. 16 Jones edged Hinds, 28-25; and No. 18 Gulf Coast ran away from Holmes, 48-14. Co-Lin, East Central and Northeast also won. The big game this week is Thursday in Ellisville as the hometown Bobcats host the Bulldogs of Perkinston.
The New Orleans Saints survived against the winless Cleveland Browns Sunday in the Superdome. The Saints rallied in the final period to score 18 points and clip the Browns, 21-18. This week the Saints head to Atlanta.
Odd & Ends
The Mississippi general fund gained $54,000 in revenue from sports betting in August. It was the first month that people were allowed to wager on sporting events at the state’s casinos.
The Jackson (TN) Generals won the Southern League Championship three games to one over the Biloxi Shuckers.
The Atlanta Braves entered the week with a six and a half-game lead in the National League East. The Braves will host St. Louis and Philadelphia this week before heading to New York and Philly to conclude the regular season.
