Free tax filing program featured at MSHoF

A Free File program that allows low-to-moderate-income Mississippi residents to prepare and file their taxes at no charge will be featured at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Tuesday.
State Department of Revenue Commissioner Ed Morgan will join other state officials to showcase the program that is a partnership between the IRS and name brand tax software companies. Using this program, eligible Mississippi residents can file both their federal and state returns for free.
In general, taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less can use Free File, which not only saves on the cost of tax preparation, but also helps taxpayers keep as much of their refund as possible. For example, the commercial tax software products available through Free File make it easy for filers to determine if they are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit that can put up to $6,000 back in working taxpayers’ pockets.
An estimated 20 to 25 percent of eligible taxpayers fail to claim it each year.
