Good Competition for C Spire Howell/Gillom Awards
Posted on: February 16,2017
There is still a while to go before the end of the regular basketball season for Mississippi colleges but voters are starting to look for their favorites to win the C Spire Howell Trophy and the C Spire Gillom Trophy. Each year a panel of state- wide media select the finalists for this coveted honor, then a combination of their votes and the popular vote sponsored by C Spire determine the Outstanding Women’s and Men’s players.
For the past two years we have presented the hardware to the same two people. For the ladies the winner has been Victoria Vivians of MSU and as the leading scorer on a team currently ranked third in the nation, she stands a good chance of becoming the first three time winner of the award ever. On the men’s side Stefan Moody of Ole Miss captured the last two trophies but we are assured a new winner this time since Stefan graduated last year.
The Trophy’s are named after MSHOF greats Peggy Gillom and Bailey Howell. Peggy and her sister Jennifer were both outstanding players at Ole Miss, in the pro ranks and later as a coach. She was not only a standout on the hardwood but in the community as well. Howell starred at Mississippi State and went on to an All-star career in the NBA before returning to the Starkville area to settle down. Both are expected to appear at the March 6th luncheon where the trophy will be handed out at the Hall of Fame at 1152 Lakeland Drive. Tickets are on sale now online at www.msfame.liquidcreative.net or by stopping by the office at the museum.
C Spire once again is the title sponsor for these awards and continues their support of athletics of all types throughout the state. All state schools that participate in basketball will have players considered for the honor.
