Hall of Fame Day, much more from Annandale

Posted on: July 20,2013

Sunday will be Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Day at Annandale for the fourth and final round of the Sanderson Farms Championship. Available in the Pearl River Resort (between the clubhouse and ninth green) will be several Mississippi Sports Hall of Famers, including Mississippi State and NBA basketball great Bailey Howell, former Ole Miss Rebel All American football and baseball standout Jake Gibbs, Ole Miss football greats and adminstrators Robert Khayat and Warner Alford and Southern Miss football legends Reggie Collier and Sammy Winder. The Hall of Famers will be available for autographs and photos at various times between noon and 3 p.m.
In other news from Annandale Saturday, Sanderson Farms CEO Joe Frank Sanderson and Gov. Phil Bryant appeared jointly in the media center to speak about the future of the tournament.
Bryant thanked Sanderson “for saving the tournament that has meant so much to Mississippi.”

Joe Frank Sanderson and Gov. Phil Bryant flank Chelsea Rick, Miss Mississippi, following a press conference Saturday at Annandale.

Sanderson said a decision will be made “quickly” as to the future of the tournament that Bryant says generates an estimated $12.5 million to the Mississippi economy.
In making the decision Sanderson said he and his board of directors “will use our heads not our hearts.”
But he clearly sounded like a man intent on keeping the tournament at Annandale, and moving it to fall dates for at least another three years.
“It feels good, it feels right,” Sanderson said.
Sanderson, a 66-year-old Laurel native and Millsaps graduate, said he wants the tournament to become “a truly statewide event” and to continue to be a huge fund-raiser for Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children.
As for moving the tournament to fall dates, Sanderson said, “The PGA Tour knows that is our preference and I think they will work with us.”
