2013 C Spire Ferriss Trophy winner Hunter Renfroe got the call Tuesday that seemed inevitable: The Crystal Springs native and former Mississippi State star is headed to the Major League San Diego Padres.
Renfroe’s call-up marks the fifth former State player to be called up this season, joining Adam Frazier, who was called up by Pittsburgh on June 24, Chad Girodo, who was called up by Toronto on April 22, Chris Stratton, who joined San Francisco on May 28 and Jonathan Holder, who joined the New York Yankees on Sept. 2006.
Renfroe finished the 2013 regular season as the SEC’s leader with 15 home runs and bested four other finalists to become the 10th winner of the Ferriss Trophy. The other finalists for the award include Delta State pitcher John Branstetter, Southern Miss pitcher Andrew Pierce, and Ole Miss pitcher/catching duo Stuart Turner and Bobby Wahl.
“It’s the greatest honor of my baseball career,” said Renfroe said after the 2013 C Spire Ferriss ceremony at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. “It was an honor to be on the platform with these other talented players and such a thrill to win an award named after Coach Ferriss.”
Playing for El Paso in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, Renfroe hit .304 with 30 home runs, 34 doubles, 95 runs scored and and 104 runs batted in this season. He was the PCL Most Valuable Player.
Playing for five teams at five different levels over the past three seasons, Renfroe has hit .280 with 77 home runs. He was the 13th pick of the 2013 Major League draft.
Renfroe will likely be in the lineup when the Padres play Arizona in San Diego tonight.
