I'm bidding on Jack Carlisle's glider
Posted on: August 01,2013
OK, I know which item I am bidding on in Saturday’s Drawdown of Champions and silent auction at your Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
It’s this splendid porch glider, made by Hall of Fame football coach Jack Carlisle, who apparently is also a master carpenter.
The 48-inch swing is made of treated pine. The 65-inch base is made of cherry and cypress. It’s a beautiful piece of patio furniture, and, as you can see, it will hold two, uh, wide bodies quite comfortably.
No doubt, we can get Coach to sign it for whoever bids highest.
Carlisle, a veteran of more than 60 years in the coaching business, will turn 84 in September.
Yes, and when several of us admired his work and told him so, he said, “Heck, y’all, it’s not rocket science.”
I asked him how long it took him to make it.
“Two and a half days,” he answered. “Wouldn’t have taken that long but I had to get in some fishing.”

Great to see old pals, Oscar and Rick, enjoying Coach Carlisle’s handiwork. Beautiful glider.
