Some love for Johnny Football, Saints' pick
Posted on: May 09,2014
Opinions are like noses. Everybody has one — or several — where the NFL Draft is concerned. My random thoughts on the NFL Draft’s first round:
• Best first round: Easily the Cleveland Browns who got a shutdown corner with the eighth pick and then watched Johnny Manziel fall all the way to their 22nd pick (the Browns traded up with Philly to get the 22nd pick.).
My take on Manziel: He’s a playmaker who will be a difference maker for the Browns. Anybody who worries about how he will do against bigger, faster linemen and linebackers needs only to watch films of his two games against Alabama. He will make plays.
• Best value for the pick: Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome rarely makes mistakes and he did not make one this year taking Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley with the 17th pick. Love Mosley, a tackling machine, one of the most solid SEC players in recent history and that’s saying something.
• Saints pick? Sean Payton is giddy after moving up seven picks to get Brandin Cooks, the Oregon State burner and Biletnikoff winner. If Payton is so sure about a guy, especially an offensive weapon, then I am, too. Cooks will be the Ying to Jimmy Graham’s Yang. Drew Brees throws as pretty a deep ball as anyone and now he’s got a guy who can go get it, which should open more things underneath. Let’s put it this way: Nobody else in the NFC South is happy about this development, least of all the defensive coordinators.
• Most questionable pick: The Jaguars took UCF quarterback Blake Bortles with the third pick of the draft. Bortles is a big mobile guy with a strong arm. But, third pick of the draft? Not sure about that.
