The picks: Mississippi Madness to continue

The pundits called last Saturday “Upset Saturday” in college football. I did not pick enough upsets. I had State; I missed on Ole Miss. I did finally get the Saints right, barely.
For the week I was a season-worst 8-4, which will get you into the BBVA Compass Bowl, but litle else.

Mississippi State 27, Auburn 26 — What, quit now? Let this sink in: If Mississippi State wins this football game, the Bulldogs will be ranked No. 1 in the USA. You could make a case they should be already with back-to-back, dominating victories over LSU and Texas A&M. This will be the hardest one yet because Auburn is seriously good and can score from anywhere on the field. But also let this sink in: If Dak Prescott has another huge game on national TV, the Heisman could be his to lose. Get a load of that — or Dak. State has the homefield advantage. Auburn has the benefit of having played in games of this magnitude much more often. This one has all the markings of an epic game.
Ole Miss 31, Texas A&M 30 — Another huge challenge for Hugh Freeze, who coaches the emotional part of football as well as anyone. He has to get the Rebels back down to earth from the Alabama upset and then go to one of the nation’s toughtest places to play and play against a really good team that has its backs to the wall. In the NFL, they call it the desperation factor. The Aggies will be desperate to win. Lose, and their championship hopes are done. I am told the game will be played before the largest crowd ever to watch a football game, college or pro, in Texas. It’s just a tough assignment all around, but no tougher than coming back from 14-3 down against Bama.
Alabama 27, Arkansas 24 — Bulldogs and Rebels beware: Arkansas is about to “get” somebody this season. It could be Alabama.
Georgia 30, Missouri 27 — Could go either way, as most of the SEC games this week.
Florida 24, LSU 21 — Florida and LSU play on the SEC undercard while State and Ole Miss are in the spotlight. Enjoy.
Jackson State 20, MVSU 17 — Would not surprise me if the Devils pulled the upset for Comegy.
Alcorn State 31, Grambling 10 — Jay Hopson’s nationally ranked Braves are the class of the SWAC.
Penn State 20, Michigan 17 — On coaching alone.
Baylor 34, TCU 31 — This ought to be a really good game between really good teams.
Oregon 34, UCLA 33 — This would be classified an upset, although a mild one.
