Tyrone Keys Honored as 2018 Rube Award Winner

Jackson, MS:  The Board of Directors of the Mississippi Sports Foundation have announced that Tyrone Keys, a 2009 Inductee into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, will receive this year’s “Rube Award”.  The honor is named in memory of Michael Rubenstein, the first Executive Director of the Hall of Fame and goes to a person who has had a lasting impact on a local, state or national level in the area of sports.
 
Keys played on a state championship team at Jackson’s Callaway High School, was a starter for Mississippi State as a defensive lineman and had an eight year career in the NFL.  From an early age Tyrone saw the power of mentoring in his own life.  He had many helping hands that allowed him to make good decisions.  He was influenced by his mother, a teacher herself, by his 6^th grade teacher Mary Hagan and by one of his high school coaches Odell Jenkins.  He saw that their caring aided him to succeed and decided he too would help those needing a helping hand.
 
25 years ago Tyrone established All Sport Community Service, Inc. and since that time ASCS has raised millions to support the educational and mentoring needs of students both in his adopted home of Tampa, FL and right here in Mississippi.  Many of the folks that mentored Tyrone are still involved in his programs and now many of the youngsters that received help from his efforts are turning around and now are involved in helping others.
 
For these good deeds and a lifetime of caring, Tyrone Keys becomes the seventh winner of this prestigious award.  He will receive the honor on July 28^th at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by Sanderson Farms and the Sanderson Farms Championship to be held at the Jackson Convention Complex.  Previous recipients were Dave “Boo” Ferriss, Ben Puckett, Archie Manning, George Bryan, Governor William Winter, and Ron Polk.  Tickets for the banquet are on sale online by clicking here or at the museum offices at 1152 Lakeland Drive, Jackson, MS.
