Billy Sam enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after graduation in 1942. He quickly attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and served as a field artillery instructor at Camp Pendleton. He shipped overseas in January, 1944, and saw action against the Japanese in the Marshall Islands. On June 16, 1944, he was killed during the second day of fighting on Saipan. His decorations include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. A dormitory at Ole Miss was named for him in 1949, and the Billy Charles Sam Scholarship Fund was endowed by the Meridian Chapter of the Cedars of Lebanon Club in 1966.
