Coach Whitney, the winningest basketball coach in Alcorn State history, coached the Braves to the first NCAA Tournament win ever by an historically black university with a 70-62 victory over South Alabama in 1980. Davey’s first love was baseball. He played shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro League.
