While trailing TCU 13-7 in the fourth quarter of the 1956 Cotton Bowl, Eagle Day ignored Coach John Vaught’s instructions to punt in a fourth-down situation. Instead, he threw a 13-yard pass to fullback Paige Cothren, gaining a first down and paving the way for the go-ahead touchdown. Ole Miss won 14-13, and the papers dubbed Day “The Mississippi Gambler.”
