• Didn’t play football as a freshman or sophomore, played in the band
• Blossomed as a senior running back, making all-district
• Two-time State champion pole vaulter, winning a meet the first time he tried the event
Mississippi College, 1987-1990
• Rushed for 4,416 yards and 38 touchdowns over four seasons
• Ran for 1,583 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior, both school records
• Led Choctaws to a national Division II championship as a junior
• Division II All-America as a junior and senior
National Football League
• Scouted by fellow Hall of Famer Hamp Cook, who encouraged the Saints to draft McAfee
• Drafted by Saints in sixth round of the 1991 draft, 154th overall
• Played 16 seasons for four different teams
• Began and ended his career as a Saint
• Led Saints in rushing as a rookie for a division winning team
• Became a special teams stalwart for most of his career, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for the Steelers in 1992
• Helped Steelers to Super Bowl XXX in the 1995 season
• Scored touchdown in final game as a Saint
• Immediately hired to work in player personal for the Saints
Did you know?
One of the fastest players in Mississippi football history, he is nicknamed Fast Freddie for obvious reasons. He grew up a huge fan of Southern Miss, but chose Mississippi College because of the all-you-can eat steak and ice cream on his recruiting visit.
