During a period of racial tensions in Boston, Scott showed up without fanfare at a practice of Jamaica Plain HS, a mostly African american football team. One of the Jamaica players, Daryl Williams, had been shot and paralyzed while in a huddle in a game against Charlestown, a mostly white school. Although the team had been traumatized by the shooting, Scott Helped the squad through some difficult times just by having a Boston sports star show up. He attended practices and games the rest of the season.
Boston Red Sox (2006)
Former Red Sox teammate Joe Foy gave Scott his nickname “Boomer” beacause, he said, Scott “really put a boom on that ball” after smacking a home run off Bob Gibson. Scott coined the word “tater” in reference to home runs.
