Jim Davenport had hoped to play ball for the Alabama Crimson Tide, until he learned that ‘Bama would not sign married athletes. But Alabama’s loss became Southern Mississippi’s gain, especially when an inspired Davenport quarterbacked Southern in back-to-back upset wins over the Tide, 25-19 (’53) and 7-2 (’54).
