• Led the Braves to an historic 80-78 victory over Mississippi State in Starkville in the NIT his junior season, scoring the winning basket
• Averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds per game as a senior
• Drafted in first round, 24th pick overall, by the Golden State Warriors
• His 14-year career included stints with the Warriors, the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs
• Made the NBA All-Rookie team in 1980-81
• Led the NBA in offensive rebounds in 1985-86
• Averaged 9.2 rebounds per game for his career
• Scored 5,904 points in his NBA career, shooting 53.1 percent from the field
• Later served as an assistant coach for the Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers
Smith, off the court one of the nicest folks you’ll meet, was nicknamed “Mr. Mean” by then-Alcorn State sports information director Gus Howard, who said that on the court Smith never smiled and usually had a scowl on his face.
