• Two way starter for Greenville High School at defensive back and running back
• Won letters in football and track
• Lead the team to a record of 19-1 over his final two years
• Team went 11-0 in 1971 and beat Jackson Callaway in the Capitol Bowl.
• Helped Greenville win two consecutive track State AA titles. Participated in the Long Jump, 220 yd. dash, 400 & 800 yard relays.
• 1973 Attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX. Team went 11-0 and won the Lone Star Conference and were NAIA Champions.
• Broke freshman record for Touchdowns with 37

• Set the all-time NAIA and school record for touchdowns with 76 over his career

• Drafted in the 6th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by Philadelphia Eagles.
• Played in 14 games in 1977. Led the NFC in kickoff returns. Scored his first NFL TD on a 99 yard kickoff return.
• 1978 Eagles improve to 9-8 and 2nd in the NFC East. Carried 259 times for 1,220 yards.
• 1979 team wins East Division going 12-6. Rushed for 1512 yards and 9 rushing TD’s. Caught 41 passes for 5 more TD’s. Named NFL All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection. Led the NFL in all-purpose yards.
• 1980 Eagles go 14-5 and lose to Raiders in Super Bowl. Had 10 TD’s for season.
• 1981 Ran for 1,402 yards and added 10 more TD’s. Had his only 100 yard receiving game.
• 1982 strike shorten season Eagles go 3-6. Montgomery had the longest run from scrimmage with a 90 yard TD.
• Totaled 58 career touchdowns.
• Coached running backs for the St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns for a total of 20 years.
Honors: Member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Named to Abilene Christian’s All-Century Team, Member of Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor, Member of Abilene Christian University Athletics Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Philadelphia Eagles Honor Roll
